BONAIRE

Bonaire's pristine reefs and diverse marine life are unique to the Caribbean. Because the waters around Bonaire are designated as an official marine park, diving Bonaire is like diving the Caribbean the way it used to be - untouched and unspoiled. The island's location in the south Caribbean gives it an arid climate with little rainfall; consequently, the waters are exceptionally clear of silt, calm, and divable year round. It is an ideal destination for underwater photographers. Water temperatures average a warm 78-84°F (25.6-28.9°C), with visibility often averaging over 100 feet(30m), and frequently, up to 150 feet (55m).

Continental operates scheduled Non-Stop round-trip air service departing Newark Liberty Airport on Saturdays at 11:55 p.m. and arriving in Bonaire on Sundays at 5:40 a.m. (flight #1553). The return flight #1556 will depart Bonaire on Sundays at 7:00 a.m. and will arrive into Newark at 10:45 a.m. (flight times seasonal).

Over the last two decades, Bonaire has consistently ranked as the finest snorkeling and scuba diving destination in the Caribbean. A major reason for this prominence is the island's diligent stewardship of its marine resources -- all of the waters off Bonaire's coast have been legally protected since 1979, and it shows.

But there is plenty more to do here. The unusually steady trade winds that wash over the island create ideal conditions for world-class windsurfing, and the sere beauty of its semi-desert landscape is home to an outlandish assortment of wildlife. Iguanas meditatively toast themselves atop the desert rock formations of Washington Slagbaai, while vast orange-pink clouds of flamingoes drift across bone-white salt flats. Divi-divi trees bend into surreal sculptures of the wind itself, and towering cacti stand as reminders of the Caribbean's diverse ecology.

We invite you to explore all these aspects of Bonaire -- and more -- in the pages that follow. Our dive pages offer the most up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of Bonaire diving on the world wide web, including site descriptions, service providers, and a Marine Park profile.

Onboard Dining

Food Glorious Food! No diving vacation would be complete without generous fine dining between your diving. Of course your Nekton cruise includes plenty of gourmet dining with lots of variety.

Meals are served in a combination of buffet and sit down -- after helping yourself at the buffet, crew will offer you drinks, wait on you for second helpings, and offer dessert and coffee. We always have regular and decaffeinated coffee brewed and offer plenty of iced tea, water and juices including grape, orange, cranberry, apple as well as Crystal Light and Gatorade.
Popcorn is also available for late night snacks. The following menu is subject to seasonal variations and changes but is representative of the fine dining you can expect to enjoy during your cruise.

Nekton's Liveaboards utilize a unique Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) design technology to provide you with the smoothest ride unlike any other live-aboards.

Why are SWATH vessels so stable? The key is the two submarine-like pontoons (see pictures) that can ride completely submerged beneath the surface of the water (unlike a catamaran where the pontoons only ride on the surface of the water.)

As a diver, you know that even on a rough day, the water is calmer just a few feet below the choppy surface - that's precisely where the pontoons which provide the buoyancy for a are located - hence the submerged pontoons act as stabilizers giving you the feeling you're on a vessel more than eight times its size!

When the Nekton Pilot was delivered, it was just the 32nd SWATH in the world and the only SWATH designed and engineered from the ground up specifically for SCUBA divers. When the Nekton Rorqual was delivered, it was and still is only the 2nd SWATH SCUBA live-aboard in the world!

Nekton's live-aboards are approximately 25 meters (80 feet) long and 12 meters (40 feet) wide. Propulsion is provided by two large 850 Kilowatt diesel engines located down aft in the pontoons thus isolating the guest area from noise and vibration and providing for more space.

120Volt/60Hz electrical power is delivered to every cabin by redundant diesel generators. Ballast tanks in the pontoons can be flooded with seawater and pumped out by huge pumps in very short notice. Ballasting up (catamaran mode) allows for shallow water harborage (1.8 meters/6 feet) and maximum speed. Ballasting down SWATH mode) provides for maximum stability.
The entire dive platform with stairs raises and lowers via hydraulic lifts making for easy access to and from the water.
The Nekton's live-aboards have modern instrumentation and communications including a global Inmarsat satellite phone with voice and fax; a side scanning SONAR, dual D-GPS navigation; RADAR; real-time weather data; EPIRB; SSB short-wave and VHF radios; and cellular telephone.
Telephone calls via satellite can be placed anytime while onboard via satellite (airtime fees apply).

Onboard fresh water is provided by high capacity desalinators and compressed SCUBA air is provided by certified dual redundant high capacity SCUBA compressors.DAN Trip Insurance - Cover Your Vacation Investment

2008 Dates to be Announced

Discount - Frequent Diver Friends (FDF)*
Over the years, Nekton has established quite a following of loyal guests who return to sail with us time and time again. To show our appreciation and gratitude of our loyal friends, Nekton Diving Cruises has created a Frequent Diving Friends program that offers an additional discount and benefits to our returning guests. Call Us for more details.

Discount - Non-Divers $100 off and Snorkelers $50 off *
Guests who do not scuba dive but want to participate in the Snorkel Program receive $50 off of our regular cruise fare. Guests who neither dive nor snorkel (but are probably with a loved one who does) are welcome to relax and enjoy the cruise as well. Nekton offers these guests a $100 discount off of our regular cruise fare.

Discount - Families*

Children and young adults under 16 years of age who are traveling with a responsible adult parent or guardian receive a 25% discount off of Nekton's regular cruise fares. Nekton has offered this discount for years - and we have always encouraged youngsters to become scuba divers so that they may gain an early appreciation for our delicate environment. Scuba diving is good clean fun.

NOTE: When multiple discounts apply, only the most generous offer can be applied to the cruise rate.
For all other offers: All cruises subject to availability. Other discounts do not apply. Unless otherwise mentioned, none of the various discounts are combinable with any other discounts including FDF so pick you best discount and go with it. Prices do not include airfare. Specials do not apply to previously deposited bookings. All prices mentioned throughout this entire Website are in US Dollars.

Scuba Diving the St. Lawrence

Fall 2008

Underwater enthusiasts will want to dive right into the clear waters of the St. Lawrence River to explore the many wrecks that rest on the riverbed. Some of the best freshwater scuba diving in the world exists in the 1000 Islands region. The water clarity provides excellent underwater visibility. Horizontal visibility of 50-70 feet in 100 depths is not unusual. There is no thermocline in this area allowing for very comfortable diving temperatures from May through October. Most importantly, Clayton is accessible to many of the quality wrecks that lay on the bottom of the St. Lawrence.

The strong current found in some area of the St. Lawrence River creates excellent drift diving conditions for those who seek artifacts. However, the many islands provide wind protection so divers can always find an alternative site, even in inclement weather.

Scuba Diving in the St. Lawrence River The St. Lawrence River offers a variety of diving sites from quite challenging to suitable for the novice. Many shipwrecks can be visited in one day trips. Because of the increase in Zebra mussels and DEC water cleanup the river's clarity is tremendous (Usually 60'. or better). Best of all it is within driving distance.

North Carolina Diving  Diving to help raise funds for the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores Dive Program. Jim and I attended this years event and had a terrific time at a beautiful destination with a professional dive operation.

Estimated Cost: $140 per day;
includes 2 Daly off-shore dives and Dive Lodge
(Bunk House) accommodations.

North Carolina's impressive diving conditions are made possible by the state's unique coastal geography and extensive maritime history. The Gulf Stream, carrying the warm, blue water from the Caribbean, produces eddies - areas containing Gulf Stream water but devoid of its strong current. These eddies engulf North Carolina's offshore waters and routinely provide divers with tropical fish, large marine animals, 80-degree water temperatures, and 75+ feet of visibility.

In addition, North Carolina waters have long existed as a segment of the heavily trafficked shipping lanes of the eastern U.S. seaboard. During WWII, Hitler's U-boats terrorized merchant vessels, sending many to their permanent resting ground 100 feet beneath the sea. These tragedies, combined with the long history of vessels claimed by the unforgiving shoals along the Outer Banks, gave North Carolina a virtually unsurpassed collection of shipwrecks and earned its waters the title The Graveyard of the Atlantic.

Bathed by the clear, warm waters of the Gulf Stream, the coast of North Carolina offers some of the best scuba and wreck diving in the United States. Whether interested in sight-seeing, underwater photography, maritime or military history, a technical diver or just beginning, the abundant marine life and numerous shipwrecks of North Carolina offer something for scuba divers of all interests and skill levels.
