Water temperatures average a warm 78-84°F (25.6-28.9°C), with visibility often averaging over 100 feet(30m), and frequently, up to 150 feet (55m).

Why are SWATH vessels so stable? The key is the two submarine-like pontoons (see pictures) that can ride completely submerged beneath the surface of the water (unlike a catamaran where the pontoons only ride on the surface of the water.)

As a diver, you know that even on a rough day, the water is calmer just a few feet below the choppy surface - that's precisely where the pontoons which provide the buoyancy for a are located - hence the submerged pontoons act as stabilizers giving you the feeling you're on a vessel more than eight times its size!

When the Nekton Pilot was delivered, it was just the 32nd SWATH in the world and the only SWATH designed and engineered from the ground up specifically for SCUBA divers. When the Nekton Rorqual was delivered, it was and still is only the 2nd SWATH SCUBA live-aboard in the world!

Nekton's live-aboards are approximately 25 meters (80 feet) long and 12 meters (40 feet) wide. Propulsion is provided by two large 850 Kilowatt diesel engines located down aft in the pontoons thus isolating the guest area from noise and vibration and providing for more space.

120Volt/60Hz electrical power is delivered to every cabin by redundant diesel generators. Ballast tanks in the pontoons can be flooded with seawater and pumped out by huge pumps in very short notice. Ballasting up (catamaran mode) allows for shallow water harborage (1.8 meters/6 feet) and maximum speed. Ballasting down SWATH mode) provides for maximum stability.
The entire dive platform with stairs raises and lowers via hydraulic lifts making for easy access to and from the water.
The Nekton's live-aboards have modern instrumentation and communications including a global Inmarsat satellite phone with voice and fax; a side scanning SONAR, dual D-GPS navigation; RADAR; real-time weather data; EPIRB; SSB short-wave and VHF radios; and cellular telephone.
 Telephone calls via satellite can be placed anytime while onboard via satellite (airtime fees apply).

Onboard fresh water is provided by high capacity desalinators and compressed SCUBA air is provided by certified dual redundant high capacity SCUBA compressors.

Scuba Diving the St. Lawrence

Fall 2008

Underwater enthusiasts will want to dive right into the clear waters of the St. Lawrence River to explore the many wrecks that rest on the riverbed. Some of the best freshwater scuba diving in the world exists in the 1000 Islands region. The water clarity provides excellent underwater visibility. Horizontal visibility of 50-70 feet in 100 depths is not unusual. There is no thermocline in this area allowing for very comfortable diving temperatures from May through October. Most importantly, Clayton is accessible to many of the quality wrecks that lay on the bottom of the St. Lawrence.

The strong current found in some area of the St. Lawrence River creates excellent drift diving conditions for those who seek artifacts. However, the many islands provide wind protection so divers can always find an alternative site, even in inclement weather.

The St. Lawrence River offers a variety of diving sites from quite challenging to suitable for the novice. Many shipwrecks can be visited in one day trips. Because of the increase in Zebra mussels and DEC water cleanup the river's clarity is tremendous (Usually 60'. or better). Waterfront Cottages Cottages right on the river or on the hillside overlooking the river. Screened patios, private hot showers, and outside barbecue. Full kitchens, furniture, double beds and double bunk beds are all provided. Pillows are provided, but sorry, no linens supplied.

Diving to help raise funds for the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores Dive Program. Jim and I attended this years event and had a terrific time at a beautiful destination with a professional dive operation. North Carolina's impressive diving conditions are made possible by the state's unique coastal geography and extensive maritime history. The Gulf Stream, carrying the warm, blue water from the Caribbean, produces eddies - areas containing Gulf Stream water but devoid of its strong current. These eddies engulf North Carolina's offshore waters and routinely provide divers with tropical fish, large marine animals, 80-degree water temperatures, and 75+ feet of visibility.

In addition, North Carolina waters have long existed as a segment of the heavily trafficked shipping lanes of the eastern U.S. seaboard. During WWII, Hitler's U-boats terrorized merchant vessels, sending many to their permanent resting ground 100 feet beneath the sea. These tragedies, combined with the long history of vessels claimed by the unforgiving shoals along the Outer Banks, gave North Carolina a virtually unsurpassed collection of shipwrecks and earned its waters the title The Graveyard of the Atlantic.

Bathed by the clear, warm waters of the Gulf Stream, the coast of North Carolina offers some of the best scuba and wreck diving in the United States. Whether interested in sight-seeing, underwater photography, maritime or military history, a technical diver or just beginning, the abundant marine life and numerous shipwrecks of North Carolina offer something for scuba divers of all interests and skill levels.
